Cricket Umpires Australia
Paul Reiffel to stand in 50th Test Match
ICC (International Cricket Council) Elite Umpire Panel member Paul Reiffel will stand in his 50th Test match on Boxing Day when Australia play India in the Second Vodafone Test Match at the MCG.
Reiffel is a former Test Player of great renown representing Australia on 35 occasions at the level taking 104 wickets as a mainstay of the Australian bowling attack in the 1990’s. Reiffel also played 92 One Day Internationals for Australia taking 106 wickets and was a member of the 1999 World Cup winning side that beat Pakistan in the Final at Lords. Reiffel played a total of 167 First-Class since debuting for Victoria in 1988 taking over 500 First-Class wickets. Reiffel also represented Nottinghamshire in the English County Championship.
Not long after retiring from playing, Reiffel took up umpiring and first stood in Victoria’s Premier Cricket competition in the early 2000’s. From there, Reiffel officiated in the Cricket Australia (CA) Underage Championships before making his First-Class umpiring debut in 2004. In 2009, Reiffel was appointed to the Sheffield Shield Final and again in 2011. In February 2009, Reiffel stood in his first One Day International when Australia played New Zealand at his home ground the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). He has a total of 71 One Day Internationals to his name including the 2015 and 2019 ICC World Cups. Reiffel has also been appointed Third Umpire in a further 50 One Day Internationals.
Reiffel’s Test umpiring debut came in July 2012 when he stood in the First Test between the West Indies and New Zealand in Antigua. The current global COVID-19 pandemic has meant his 49th and 50th Test matches have come on home soil as for the first time in almost two decades, the ICC appointed umpires to their home Test Matches. The home appointment means Reiffel has now stood in Test Matches in all Test Playing nations around the world.
Fittingly, Reiffel brings up the 50 Test Match Milestone on his home ground the MCG. Reiffel becomes the seventh Australian Umpire to stand in 50 Test Matches.
