Paul Wilson appointed to ICC Cricket World Cup
Congratulations to Cricket Australia (CA) National Umpire Panel member Paul Wilson, who has been appointed to officiate in the ICC Cricket World Cup in England and Wales.
Selected by the International Cricket Council (ICC), Wilson joins the 16-Umpire panel for his first men’s ICC Cricket World Cup tournament.
Wilson’s first appointment to the tournament is as 4th Umpire on Saturday 1 June in the fixture between New Zealand and Sri Lanka in Cardiff. Three-days later at the same venue, Wilson will stand on-field alongside Nigel Llong in the match between Afghanistan and Sri Lanka. His following game in Bristol between Pakistan and Sri Lanka will be from the Third Umpire box.
In total, Wilson has been appointed to five games on-field; three as TV Umpire and a further three as 4th Umpire. Alongside Llong in Cardiff (and Headingly), Wilson will also stand on-field with fellow countryman Rod Tucker at the Hampshire Bowl; and Marais Erasmus and Chris Gaffaney at matches in Headingly.
Wilson travels to the ICC Cricket World Cup having previously officiated in four ICC tournaments. Throughout June and July 2017, Wilson was appointed to the ICC Women’s World Cup in the United Kingdom, which included appointment to the Final at Lord’s as Third Umpire. He is no stranger to the United Kingdom conditions, having also officiated there in the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifiers in July 2015. In January 2018, Wilson stood in the ICC Under 19 Cricket World Cup in New Zealand, before travelling to Zimbabwe the following month to stand in the ICC World Cup Qualifiers.
Wilson heads into the tournament after a standout 2018/19 season. Named the CA Umpire of the Year for the second consecutive year in March, Wilson stood in matches across India, New Zealand and the West Indies alongside his Australian domestic cricket commitments.
Since November 2018, Wilson has been appointed by the ICC to three One-Day International Series’, including India versus West Indies; New Zealand versus Sri Lanka; and most recently West Indies versus England in February 2019. His international cricket stint continued on Australian soil with appointment to the Gillette T20 INTL Series against South Africa and India before Christmas, as well as the Gillette One-Day International Series between Australia and India throughout January 2019. On the Domestic front, Wilson was appointed to the JLT Sheffield Shield and JLT One-Day Cup Finals.
The 48-match tournament, commencing on Thursday 30 May, will also feature Australia ICC Elite Panel Umpires Bruce Oxenford, Paul Reiffel and Rod Tucker, whilst David Boon represents the country as a Match Referee.
