History made in Adelaide

Waldron & Sheridan

SACA Umpires Mary Waldron and Eloise Sheridan made history in Adelaide, when they became the first Female Umpire pair to officiate in a men's Premier First-Grade match.

Both umpires have featured at several recent Cricket Australia (CA) Underage Championships, however their umpiring careers have followed different pathways to date.

Sheridan joined the South Australian State Umpire Panel (STP) following a busy 2017-18 season. The former First-Grade player took up umpiring to remain involved in the game and this year became the first female umpire appointed to the SA Panel. Last season Sheridan was appointed to both the CA Under 18 and CA Under 15 Female National Championships and travelled to Queensland this season to officiate in the CA Under 17 Male National Championships. Sheridan made history last season by becoming the first female to umpire a SACA first-grade Premier men’s match. Her strong performances across the season led to her appointment to the SACA Premier men’s T20 Final at Adelaide Oval.

Earlier this season, Sheridan made her Rebel WBBL on-field Debut in the match between the Adelaide Strikers and Melbourne Stars at Karen Rolton Oval. Two days later, Sheridan was on-field again, this time with CA Supplementary Umpire Panel member Claire Polosak when the Strikers met the Stars at the Adelaide Oval. The match was significant as this was the first time two female umpires had stood on-field for a CA professional fixture. More recently, Sheridan made her WNCL on-field debut in the match between South Australia and New South Wales at Karen Rolton Oval.

Waldron’s cricketing journey is intertwined between playing and umpiring. Waldron has represented Ireland in 40 Women’s One-Day Internationals and 47 Women’s T20 matches to date with the most recent being in the Women’s T20 World Cup in the West Indies. Waldron continues to ply her trade during the northern summer, returning down under to umpire during the Australian summer.

The wicket-keeper-turn umpire has been officiating in the SACA Premier Cricket competition for the past two seasons and among her many underage appointments, has stood in all four senior men’s grades in all three formats. Prior to that, Waldron played and umpired in the Tasmania Premier Cricket system, first arriving in the Apple Isle in 2014. Waldron achieved a significant milestone in August 2018, making her List-A umpiring debut in the match between Ireland A and Bangladesh A men’s teams in Dublin. Earlier this year, Waldron travelled to Bendigo and Ballarat in Victoria to officiate in the CA Under 18 Female National Championships where she stood in both the T20 and 50-Over finals.

Sheridan and Waldron were appointed to the SACA First-Grade match between Tea Tree Gully and Northern Districts.
