Mike Graham-Smith to make Women’s Test Match Umpiring Debut

27 January 2022

Cricket Australia (CA) National Umpire Panel (NUP) member Mike Graham-Smith today becomes the latest Australian Umpire to stand in a Test Match.

Graham-Smith makes his Women’s Test Umpiring debut when Australia play England in the Commonwealth Bank Women’s Ashes Test Match at Manuka Oval in Canberra. Graham-Smith is a former player who played over 200 First-Grade matches for the University Cricket Club in Tasmania’s Premier Cricket competition. Graham-Smith ended his playing career and turned to umpiring in 2007. Graham-Smith’s umpiring journey progressed, being appointed to the 2009 Under 17 Male National Championships before moving to the Under 19 Male competition the following year. In 2013, Graham-Smith was elevated to the National Umpiring Panel (NUP). That season, Graham-Smith made his debut in both List-A (Domestic One-Day Cup) and First-Class cricket. Graham-Smith's First-Class debut saw a full-strength New South Wales and Victoria go head-to-head in a memorable Sheffield Shield match at the MCG. Graham-Smith has since stood in 38 First-Class and 29 List-A placing him in the top bracket of umpires to come out of Tasmania.

In 2018/19, Graham-Smith travelled to New Zealand on the Umpire Exchange program to officiate in the Plunket Shield, New Zealand's First-Class cricket competition. When possible, Graham-Smith continues to stand in Tasmania's Premier Cricket competition and plays an active role in the development of up and coming umpires. In 2018, Graham-Smith was appointed by CA to officiate in the Under 17 Male National Championships in Queensland and performed the duel role of mentoring and umpiring during that competition.

At International level, Graham-Smith has stood in four Women’s One Day Internationals, including officiating in all three of this year’s Rosebowl Series between Australia and New Zealand in the Brisbane Hub. Graham-Smith also stood in the Women’s T20 International Series between the two nations.

Graham-Smith becomes just the 65th Australian cricket umpire to stand in a Women’s Test Match and will stand alongside fellow debutant Eloise Sheridan. CA National Umpire Panel member Bruce Oxenford has been appointed Third Umpire whilst Claire Polosak has been appointed as Fourth Umpire. Overseeing proceedings will be ICC Match Referee Steve Bernard.
