Match Referee David Gilbert to officiate First-Class match
David Gilbert will make his First-Class Match Refereeing debut at Bankstown Oval, as New South Wales take on South Australia.
Gilbert joined the Cricket Australia (CA) Supplementary Referee Panel in season 2018/19 with a wealth of playing and administrative experience.
As a player, right-arm fast bowler Gilbert debuted for Australia against England at The Oval in August 1985. He played nine Test Matches in total, and a further 14 One-Day Internationals during the 1980’s. Gilbert played 127 First-Class matches, which included representing New South Wales and Tasmania in the Sheffield Shield, as well as a stint in England for Gloucestershire. His illustrious career, which yielded 354 First-Class wickets, included a Sheffield Shield Final against Queensland in season 1984/85. There he hit the winning run to seal a one-wicket victory. In the same year New South Wales also won the One-Day Cup title – the first time the state had ever achieved this feat.
Gilbert served as Cricket New South Wales CEO between 2003 and 2014. Under his watch participation in the game increased by 130%; revenue trebled, and the percentage of NSW originated players in Australia’s male and female Test teams were higher than at any time in the 30 years prior. He was also instrumental in bringing international cricket to ANZ Stadium and extending Cricket New South Wales’ footprint throughout the key growth area of Western Sydney with the development of Blacktown International Sportspark.
Gilbert was President of his former Premier Cricket Club, Western Suburbs, between 2014-2018. It was for ‘Wests’ that he was selected in the Clubs ‘Team of the Millennium’. His off-field involvement also included coach and cricket manager roles for English County team Sussex and is also a current SCG Trustee.
Most recently Gilbert was appointed to the WNCL Final between New South Wales and Western Australia at North Sydney Oval. This season he has officiated throughout the Women’s A Series between Australia A and India A; Rebel WBBL; CA Under 17 National Championships; a men’s Tour Match featuring Pakistan as well as WNCL minor-round matches.
Gilbert’s debut is alongside Umpires Simon Fry and Shawn Craig and was presented with his milestone certificate by Cricket New South Wales Chief Executive Officer, Lee Germon
