Phil Gillespie makes Women’s Test Match Debut

Cricket Australia (CA) National Umpire Panel (NUP) member Phil Gillespie will make his Women’s Test Match umpiring debut when Australia play India in the Day/Night Test Match at Metricon Stadium on the Gold Coast starting this afternoon.

Gillespie made his Women’s One Day International debut in November 2014 when Australia played the West Indies at Hurstville Oval. Gillespie has since gone on to stand in 12 Women’s ODIs with a further three officiating as Third Umpire. There was a gap of four years before Gillespie would make his first appearance on-field in a Women’s T20 International. That was to take place in September 2018 when Australia played New Zealand at North Sydney Oval. Gillespie has four Women’s T20 International on-field appearances to his name with a further two as Third Umpire. Gillespie will add to that tally next week in the final component of this series.

Gillespie’s International career extends to the men’s game where he has been appointed Fourth Umpire in seven T20 Internationals going back to 2018. On the domestic front, Gillespie has been on CA’s NUP since the 2015/16 season. Last season, Gillespie passed the 50 KFC BBL match milestone to add to his tally of 28 First-Class and 18 List-A matches to his name. Gillespie’s appointment to the Commonwealth Bank Women’ Test Match means that he will join the long list of Australian Test Match umpires.

Today, Gillespie stands alongside CA SUP member Claire Polosak with fellow CA NUP member Bruce Oxenford appointed to the position of Third Umpire. CA SUP member Eloise Sheridan has been appointed as the Fourth Umpire whilst International Cricket Council (ICC) Match Referee Stratford is appointed to oversee proceedings.
