Cricket Australia (CA) National Umpire Panel (NUP) member Donovan Koch has been appointed as Fourth Umpire to the Fifth Vodafone Test Match between Australia and England in Hobart.

Prior to this season, Koch was appointed to the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) International Panel of Umpires. Koch is a former First-Class cricketer from South Africa who played 21 matches at First-Class level and a further 20 List-A games. Koch moved to the United Kingdom in 2003 where he played League Cricket in South Yorkshire before commencing his umpiring journey in 2011. Koch went on to officiate in ECB Second XI and Minor County fixtures. He moved to Australia in September 2012 and officiated in the Queensland Premier Cricket competition.

Prior to the 2016/17 season, Koch was appointed to the CA Development Umpire Panel (now Supplementary Umpire Panel) for the first time. The following season was a breakout year for Koch which included several significant on-field debuts and milestones. Koch made his List-A debut in the One-Day Cup competition in the fixture between Queensland and the Cricket Australia XI at AB Field in Brisbane. Then there was appointment to two rain affected Women’s Tour Matches in Brisbane before officiating as Fourth Umpire to the first Women’s One-Day International at AB Field.

In November 2017, Koch made his First-Class Umpiring debut in the Sheffield Shield match between Victoria and Tasmania at the MCG and has since stood in 13 First-Class matches. Later in the season, Koch stepped onto the WACA in Perth for his debut KFC BBL match between the Perth Scorchers and Sydney Sixers. 2020/21 was Koch’s busiest to date being one of a small number of match officials being able to travel interstate with government restrictions in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Koch was appointed to the Women’s International T20 and One Day Internationals in Brisbane before travelling to Adelaide to stand in the Marsh Sheffield Shield opening rounds which were played in a bio-secure hub. Koch officiated all around Australia during the KFC BBL10 crossing state borders multiple times in the most challenging BBL season in history. Koch finished the Australian domestic summer with appointment as Third Umpire to the Sheffield Shield Final between Queensland and New South Wales at AB Field in Brisbane.

As a member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) International Panel, Koch is available to support the ICC Elite Panel of Umpires. Umpires on this panel can be used by the ICC in international matches or by the home board for on field duties in ODIs or fourth umpire duties for Tests and ODIs. The officiating team joining Koch for the Fifth Vodafone Ashes Test will be on-field umpires Rod Tucker and Paul Wilson, TV Umpire Paul Reiffel. ICC Match Referee David Boon returns to the Playing Control to oversee a rare home Test Match for the Tasmanian.
