Donovan Koch elevated to the Cricket Australia National Umpire Panel
Cricket Australia (CA) have announced that Queensland Umpire Donovan Koch has been elevated from the CA Supplementary Umpire Panel (SUP) to the National Umpire Panel (NUP) for season 2019/20.
Koch is a former First-Class cricketer from South Africa who played 21 matches at First-Class level and a further 20 List-A games since debuting in 1997. Koch moved to the United Kingdom in 2003 where he played League Cricket in South Yorkshire before commencing his umpiring journey in 2011. Koch went on to officiate in ECB Second XI and Minor County fixtures. He moved to Australia in September 2012 and has been plying his umpiring trade in the Queensland Premier Cricket competition. During his early seasons in Queensland, Koch won the Mel Johnson Medal, which is awarded to the member who shows great promise and has the potential to reach the elite level in umpiring.
In 2014/15, Koch was appointed to CA competitions Toyota Futures League; WNCL and WT20 fixtures as well as the CA Under 17 National Championships in Tasmania. The following season Koch officiated at the CA Under 19 National Championships in Adelaide and in the lead up to the inaugural WBBL where he stood in three matches. Koch’s personal development was further strengthened in 2016 with his involvement in the Australian Sports Commission National Officiating Scholarship program.
Koch was appointed to the CA Development Umpire Panel (later Supplementary Umpire Panel) for the 2016/17 season and officiated in two Tour Matches including the Cricket Australia XI versus Pakistan at AB Field and the Governor General’s XI featuring the Australian Women and South African Women in Sydney.
Season 2017/18 was a breakout year for Koch, which included significant on-field debuts. He made his List-A debut in the JLT One-Day Cup competition in the fixture between Queensland and the Cricket Australia XI in Brisbane and stood in a second game in Sydney later in the same tournament. Koch was appointed to two rain affected Women’s Tour Matches in Brisbane before appointment as Fourth Umpire to the first Women’s One-Day International at AB Field.
In November 2017, Koch made his First-Class Umpiring debut in the JLT Sheffield Shield fixture between Victoria and Tasmania at the MCG and has since stood in another three First-Class matches. Koch’s red and white ball debuts were complemented later in the season when he stepped onto the WACA in Perth for his debut KFC BBL match between the Perth Scorchers and Sydney Sixers.
Last season Koch was appointed on-field for the Rebel WBBL|04 Final between the Brisbane Heat and Sydney Sixers at a capacity Drummoyne Oval and continued to gain valuable experience through appointments to the JLT One-Day Cup and JLT Sheffield Shield matches. In March, he stood in the Queensland Premier Cricket Final for his fourth straight year.
Koch joins the list of Queensland umpires on the CA National Umpire Panel which includes Test umpires Peter Parker and Bruce Oxenford.
