Donovan Koch invited to join CA Development Umpire Panel
Congratulations to Queensland’s Donovan Koch (pictured right) who has been invited to join the CA Development Umpire Panel in season 2016/17
South African born Koch commenced his playing career at Western Province in 1997 before making his First Class debut in 2000. He went on to play 21 First Class matches, and a further 20 List A games. He then moved to England in March 2003, where he played for Whitley Hall Cricket Club in the South Yorkshire Cricket League.
In 2011 Koch began his umpiring career in the Yorkshire League. By the completion of his first season in the League, Koch was appointed to officiate his first ECB Second XI match and Minor Counties fixtures.
Koch arrived in Australia in September 2012 and commenced umpiring in the Queensland Premier Cricket competition during the 2012/2013 season. Last season, Koch stood in his second consecutive Premier First Grade Final. Over the past two seasons Koch has officiated at the CA Under 19 and Under 17 Male National Championships and stood in Toyota Futures League, Rebel WBBL and WNCL fixtures.
The Development Umpire Panel has expanded from a five member panel in 2015/16 to a six person panel this season. Koch has been invited to join fellow Queenslander Damien Mealey, as well as New South Welshman Simon Lightbody, Claire Polosak and Tony Wilds and Victorian David Shepard on the panel. The panel will be primarily responsible for umpiring matches in the Women’s Big Bash League, WNCL and Toyota Futures League competitions.
CA Match Officials Manager, Sean Easey said: “These emerging umpires have been identified as potential National Umpire Panel members for future seasons, with Claire Polosak already becoming the first Australian female umpire selected in the ICC Women’s World T20 earlier this year in India.
“They have a wonderful opportunity to learn and officiate alongside our National Panel and we wish them all the best for the season ahead,” Easey said.
CA’s National Umpire Panel and Development Umpire Panel members are selected by the Umpire High Performance Panel whose members are Steve Bernard, Daryl Harper, Peter Marshall, Bob Stratford, David Talalla and CA’s Match Officials Manager Sean Easey.
