Match Referee David Johnston to officiate KFC BBL match
David Johnston will make his Domestic T20 Match Refereeing debut at Blundstone Arena, when the Melbourne Renegades play the Perth Scorchers in the KFC BBL10.
Johnston joined the Cricket Australia Match Officials team in 2017/18 and has since been a prominent match referee in Australian Domestic Cricket. Johnston’s match refereeing career spans the WNCL, Toyota Second XI and the rebel WBBL where he has officiated in 30 Matches. Johnston oversaw last season’s rebel WBBL Final between the Brisbane Heat and Adelaide Strikers.
As a player, Johnston played 10 First-Class Matches and 16 One Day Domestic matches for South Australia, including the 1983/84 Final as part of the winning side. Johnston played an additional three List-A matches for South Australia against touring teams. Johnston’s career yielded 23 First-Class wickets including a best bowling performance of 4/46. In List-A matches, Johnston took a further 18 wickets.
Johnston served as Chief Executive Officer of Cricket Tasmania in an overall tenure dating back to 1997. Prior to that, Johnston worked for six years at the South Australian Cricket Association (SACA). Johnston was instrumental in the redevelopment of Blundstone Arena in which the David Boon, Ricky Ponting and Members’ Stand were all constructed along with the world-class floodlights. Johnston also oversaw the establishment of the Cricket Museum at Blundstone Arena, the formation of the Hobart Hurricanes and significant on-field success for the Tasmania Tigers (three Sheffield Shield and three One Day Cups).
Johnston’s contribution to Australian Cricket continues when he officiates his first KFC BBL match, fittingly at Blundstone Arena. Johnston debuts alongside Umpires Donovan Koch, Mike Graham-Smith, Darren Close & Nathan Johnstone.
