Darren Close makes BBL umpiring debut

12-201219 Darren Close

Cricket Australia (CA) Supplementary Umpire Panel (SUP) member Darren Close will make his KFC BBL umpiring debut in the match between the Hobart Hurricanes and the Sydney Sixers at Traeger Park in Alice Springs.

Close is enjoying a ‘second’ umpiring career of sorts having officiated in First-Class and List-A cricket in the 1980’s and early 1990’s. After debuting as an 18-year old in season 1986/87, Close umpired top-level matches in Tasmania before moving to the United Kingdom for work.

Upon his return to Australia in 2014, Close resumed umpiring on the Apple Isle and was elevated to the SUP prior to the 2017/18 season.

Close will stand in his first BBL fixture with a wealth of T20 experience behind him. He has stood in 29 Rebel WBBL matches including the Semi Finals over the last two seasons. Close has a further seven appearances as Third Umpire to his name including the final this year between the Brisbane Heat and the Adelaide Strikers at Allan Border Field.

Hailing from Devonport, Close will experience extreme conditions with the mercury set to soar to 42 degrees for the game. However, he is no stranger to the Red Centre, having officiated in the WBBL|03 at Traeger Park in January 2018.

Close will be joined on-field by National Umpire Panel member Tony Wilds. Geoff Joshua and Harsimran Singh have been appointed Third and Fourth Umpire respectively. The match will be overseen by Match Referee Steve Bernard.
