CA Match Officials Unit restructure finalised

29 July 2016

Simon Taufel

The final stage in the CA Match Officials Unit restructure has been finalised today, with the appointment of former ICC Elite Panel Member, Simon Taufel, as the Cricket Australia Match Referee and Umpire Selection Manager.

Making his Test Debut at age 29, Taufel officiated in a total of 74 Tests; 174 One-Day Internationals and 34 Twenty20 Internationals. In season 2012/13, Taufel called stumps on his decorated career, which comprised of 400 games, of which 105 were First Class matches. His outstanding on-field performances were recognised by being awarded the ICC Umpire of the Year for five consecutive years. Post umpiring, Taufel continued with the ICC in capacity of Umpire Performance and Training Manager, and more recently as Training Manager.

The CA Match Referee and Umpire Selection Manager role will provide dedicated performance management for the Match Referees and that will also oversee the Umpire assessment, appointment and selection processes. Taufel will commence in this position mid-August.

Having recently completed his Master of Business (Sport Management) at Deakin University, Chris Grant joins the Match Officials Team as the Match Officials Administration Officer. Over recent years, Grant has been instrumental in the successful operation of Cricket4Kids, an organisation that helps collect, transport and distribute cricket equipment to less fortunate communities across 16 different countries. With the advent of online systems to help recruitment and retention of grass roots Match Officials, matched with the increase of appointments across 20 different CA sanctioned competitions, Grant will be an integral addition to both the CA team and the wider Match Officials community. Grant will commence this position early August.

Complemented with these new roles is the CA Umpire Coach moving from a contract to full time position. Current incumbent, former CA National Umpire Panel member Ian Lock who was appointed last year, will again perform this role in a full time capacity for season 2016/17.
