UMPIRING BACKGROUND
Why did you choose umpiring?
To give it a go and to help out my coach at the time
Who has had the most influence on your umpiring career?
In the early years, Lance Cox – North West Tasmania Umpires Advisor, and latterly, Richard Widows – Tasmania High Performance Umpire Coach
My wife and children for their support & encouragement
Describe your memories from your First Class debut
Devonport Oval in October 1986 – Tas v Vic. I remember the first decision I made was giving Keith Bradshaw out CB off Simon O’Donnell. Merv Hughes steaming in from my end. Dean Jones scored a memorable 111
Which is your favourite cricket ground to umpire at and why?
Adelaide Oval - I umpired there in 1988 for the U19 World Cup and then again recently in the Big Bash. It has a special atmosphere
What's the strangest thing you've seen happen on field?
A batsman being hit on the helmet, and going down, in a 1st Grade Final and his mother coming out onto the field to berate the bowler by shouting at him and calling him, amongst other things, a bully. The batsman was very embarrassed in asking his mum to get off the field
Greatest cricket moment you've seen on field?
Being at the bowler’s end when Dennis Lillee delivered his first ball, after signing for Tasmania, dismissing Andrew Hilditch caught behind. Hilditch stood his ground so I had to raise the finger and the crowd went wild
If you could invent a new rule for the game, what would it be?
More of a penalty for bowling foot fault no-balls. Something like 2 runs and a free hit, in all forms of the game
Why should people get involved with umpiring?
It is a great way to see a great game. Also a great way to stay in the game, particularly if you’re ending your playing days
What advice would you give to aspiring umpires?
Trust yourself and enjoy the experience. Be reflective and always remain a student of the game
